The Importance of Church Attendance

What our church services offer is what Christian Science reveals—the truth of God and man. That is why services in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, are the most important events taking place in the community. They offer the pearl of great price to mankind; and when church members keep this fact in the forefront of their thought, they will achieve regular church attendance as a concrete proof of love for their fellows. Thus the Christ, Truth, will be lifted up in the community, and the spiritual light that is made manifest will attract those ready and waiting for their Redeemer.

If a human obligation, inadequate transportation, sickness, idleness, forgetfulness, or weariness suggests that one not attend a service, Christian Science soon meets this negativeness. It shows that all human situations are actually subjective—states of consciousness—never states of matter. Therefore we have to analyze our experience intelligently in order to discern what is controlling us and to spiritualize our thought.

When we turn to God, the divine Mind, the only source of real intelligence, to give us light, we find that the human situation which would prevent us from regular church attendance is not what it seems to be, but is a false argument of mortal mind, appearing to the individual under the guise best suited to gain his unquestioning acceptance. But if we wait on divine Love, we shall see the solution of our problem, and the human need will be met without conflicting with the obligations to our church.
