"Put our foot firmly down on...

"Put our foot firmly down on the belief that there is sensation in matter." This statement, once made by a teacher of Christian Science, was very helpful to me this past summer when I was visiting my aunt, who is not a Christian Scientist.

Early one morning I rowed to a point about a half mile from the house. After I had left the boat I stepped on a rusty spike. Great fear seized my thought as I remembered I was not near home and knew no Christian Scientists where I was staying. But then I remembered where man actually is—in the kingdom of God—and I remembered that God is ever present.

I started repeating aloud the ninety-first Psalm, which begins (verses 1 and 2): "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust." I walked back to my boat and rowed back declaring spiritual truths as I had learned to do in the Christian Science Sunday School.
