Moral Freedom

Moral freedom is the freedom to do what is right, to prove God's government of one's life, and to show respect for the rights of others. To maintain or to attain moral freedom, morality must be understood; and so must immorality.

Morality is the mental state in which one's thoughts are in accord with God's will for man, hence actively good and harmless. Immorality is the opposite mental state in which one's thoughts are in defiance of God's will for man, hence actively evil and harmful.

Christian Science reveals scientific reasons for maintaining strict morality. For one thing, it is nearer the truth of being than is immorality; and the truth of man is that he is God's image and is invariably governed by Him. Also, moral states bring joy and health, and they break down every kind of limitation. Moral states indicate the falling away of evil, which would separate men from God and rob them of spiritual progress. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy says, "There is moral freedom in Soul." Science and Health, p. 58;
