The Secret: Never Stop Loving

Every problem that has ever faced a Sunday School teacher was met and mastered by Christ Jesus. In him we have an example of a persistent, consecrated teacher, firm but unvarying in his love for his disciples. Although he found that the disciples willingly followed his first call, Jesus encountered wavering faith, misunderstanding, denial, and betrayal before the light of spiritual understanding dawned permanently in their thought.

There is a lesson for Sunday School teachers in Jesus' patience with Peter. In a moment of clear-sightedness Peter declared. "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matt. 16:16). On the strength of this Jesus named him Peter—"rock." There were times when Peter fell far short of this standard: he failed to walk on the water, failed to heal a difficult case, and even denied Jesus. But Jesus held to the spiritual quality he had recognized until Peter consistently exemplified it.

A teacher brought to Sunday School a young man of high school age, new to Christian Science. He was assigned to her class, and she taught him patiently for many months. But after about two years he dropped out.
