Stilling Storms
When Christ Jesus stilled a great storm of wind on the Sea of Galilee, he was scientifically proving the power of Christ, Truth, over a destructive force that has plagued humanity throughout its long history. Can the Master's act be marked off as a miracle which only he as the Son of God could bring about, or was it something that all Christians should seek to emulate?
As in all of his so-called miracles, Jesus was subordinating what appeared to be a material condition to a spiritualized state of thought, false law to divine law. He showed that storms are mental states when, according to Mark (4:39), "he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm."
Until the discovery of Christian Science by Mary Baker Eddy, it was scarcely imagined that miracles are not an infraction of God's laws but the fulfilling of them. God's laws act in individual thought; and when they are understood and obeyed, they control the experiences that take place in consciousness. And so it is with storms.
