Love Heals Personal Strife

In the course of a day it is not unusual to overhear scraps of conversation on the subject of troubled human relationships. Too often a charitable and reasoning attitude toward another is not forthcoming, and there may be an airing of self-righteousness and vindictiveness. But one who chooses to forsake the slippery footing of mortal existence and turn to God, divine Love, discovers that a sure road to unity— the spiritual one—is open to him and his brother.

How necessary it is for men to learn to love as the Master did in order to promote harmonious relationships! Christ Jesus presented a definite guide to harmony for mankind. When questioned by the scribe about the most important commandment, he answered, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength" (Mark 12:130); and he continued with a second commandment, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."

Many devout persons try earnestly to obey these two great commandments of the Master, yet find it difficult to see eye to eye with their neighbor. Following the teachings of Christian Science, one learns that these two Scriptural directives require one to love both God and man through increased spiritual understanding. This entails breaking the mesmeric belief that man is a material being capable of selfishness and hatred.
