Activities for the Armed Services

Progress is God's law. It is natural and to be expected. To progress spiritually, in or out of the Armed Forces, one must love good and constantly grow in his knowledge of Truth. Christian Science Activities for the Armed Services gratefully reports that military personnel and their families are gaining and demonstrating this love and understanding and so are showing progress.

The experience of a young recruit illustrates this fact. At the beginning of his training, he so impressed a Navy Chaplain with his affection for good and his devotion to Truth that the Chaplain invited him to usher at the next Christian Science service. Week after week he did not miss a Sunday service or midweek meeting, and he faithfully and lovingly performed his duties as usher.

For a recruit to attend so regularly is an outstanding achievement; recruit training is intensive and rigorous and a period of strict regimentation. If this young man was ordered to stand watch or do kitchen police at the time of a church service, he went to the officer on duty, explained how his religion had helped him during training and requested to be excused to attend church and serve as usher. Permission was always granted.
