A College Student Writes

What Sunday School Means to Me

The Christian Science Sunday School has taught me a pattern of thinking that has become for me the way of Life. In the early-classes I was taught to love the Bible stories that illustrated God's love for man. Two of my favorite ones were those of Daniel in the lions' den and David's victory over Goliath. These stories contain lessons that I easily understood as a child.

My teachers pointed out that it was divine Love which closed the lions' mouths and protected David from Goliath. I needed to apply these lessons, which teach that God, divine Love, always protects us, because the fear of dogs and other animals often loomed large. Thus the realization of God's protecting love was early established in my thinking.

An increased understanding of these stories shows that they can be applied to all phases of life, not merely to a fear of animals or of what seem to be giants. The story of Daniel in the lions' den teaches that if we take a stand for what we know is the truth, no harm can come to us, because divine Love will care for us on every occasion. Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 385), "Whatever it is your duty to do, you can do without harm to yourself."
