Laura's Demonstration

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Laura enjoyed attending school when she was in the lower grades and was always eager to be on her way in the morning. But later on, she no longer liked to go to school, because she believed that her teacher was cross and unfriendly.

One day when Laura complained about her teacher, her mother reminded her that to express love to others helps us solve our problems and brings us happiness.

"You know that Christ Jesus told his followers (John 7:24), 'Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment,'" said her mother. "That means that we should not believe that error is real or belongs to anyone, but we should know that only good is really-present and has power."

Then her mother opened her copy of Mrs. Eddy's "Miscellaneous Writings" and read aloud this passage, which had often been helpful to her (p. 113): "Divine Love is our hope, strength, and shield. We have nothing to fear when Love is at the helm of thought, but everything to enjoy on earth and in heaven."

The next day as Laura sat in the schoolroom she remembered the conversation with her mother, as well as some of the truths she had learned in the Christian Science Sunday School. The thought came to her clearly that she could change her thinking about her teacher and know that she really was not a cross person at all but was God's perfect child, loving and harmonious.

Laura knew that this was the truth of herself and of each one of her classmates as well. She saw that since Truth and Love are everywhere, they were right there in the schoolroom and that there was no place left for error. These loving thoughts made her feel happy and free.

When she returned home from school in the afternoon, Laura said cheerfully: "Mother, the teacher was not a bit cross today. Why, she even smiled at me. When I realized that she was really God's perfect child, everything seemed different." Mother was glad to hear about Laura's experience, for it proved that she was using her understanding of Christian Science.

Laura continues to enjoy her school days. She helps her teacher in every way she can, and the teacher appreciates her help.

Sometimes in the Sunday School Laura sings a hymn which shows us that love has power to free us from all error. It begins (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 179):

Love one another,—word of revelation;
Love frees from error's thrall,—Love is
liberation.
Love's way the Master trod;
He that loves shall walk with God.
Love is the royal way.

O give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his
name: make known his deeds among the
people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto
him: talk ye of all his wondrous
works.... Let the heart of them rejoice
that seek the Lord.—Psalm 105:1-3.
