As a child I was very frail
As a child I was very frail. When I was over twenty years of age I suddenly had to be taken to a sanatorium for what was diagnosed by a medical specialist as a severe case of tuberculosis. Even then I was unafraid, and because of my courage the manager of the sanatorium assigned me to comfort the other patients. After several months I was released as healed and started to work again. However, this healing was not permanent. There was a recurrence of the symptoms.
It was in this extremity, and because I no more wanted to be dependent on persons, that I remembered having heard of Christian Science. I immediately began a consecrated study of this religion, for I had an earnest desire to rely wholly on God and no longer on medical treatment. From the very moment I found Science I was convinced of the truth and love it teaches, and I studied the whole Bible Lesson, provided in the Quarterly, every day regularly.
Treatment was requested from and given by a faithful practitioner for several weeks, and I made rapid progress. Then I continued joyously praying and studying the Bible, together with Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, without any further help from a practitioner. I clung to these words in the textbook, Science and Health (p. 16): "Only as we rise above all material sensuousness and sin, can we reach the heaven-born aspiration and spiritual consciousness, which is indicated in the Lord's Prayer and which instantaneously heals the sick."
