Procedures

From time to time questions are received as to the best procedures for following the Order of Exercises for the Sunday School on page 127 of the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy. These exercises should be followed exactly as set forth in the Manual. There is no rule on the wording to be used in the announcing of the hymns and on other steps in the exercises.

At No. 3 the Order of Exercises requires that the Golden Text be repeated by the children. Some superintendents, uncertain of the meaning here of the word "repeated," have thought that the Golden Text should be read by them before being repeated by the children. As the Manual does not stipulate that the text should be read first, this procedure should not be followed.

In many branches the superintendent, after announcing the subject of the Lesson-Sermon and the page on which it is to be found in the Christian Science Quarterly, asks the pupils to repeat the Golden Text and names the book of the Bible where it is to be found. The Golden Text is then repeated. In most Sunday Schools the teachers and officers join in the repetition. Many pupils, asked by their teachers to learn the Golden Text, like to repeat it from memory; but, if they wish, the pupils may read it from the Quarterly.
