Praying Unselfishly Heals Fear

[Of Special Interest to Children]

It was a cold and snowy night. Linda, who was nine years old, had been left to watch over her two-and-a-half-year-old baby brother while her mother went to get Linda's older brother David, who was attending a boy scout meeting. When her mother had started to drive the car through the deep snow, the car stuck fast in a snowbank in the driveway. So Mother had asked a neighbor to drive her to pick up David.

All of this took a great deal of time and made Mother very late in returning. When Linda looked out the window and saw the snow pelting hard against the pane, she became frightened. But she had learned in a Christian Science Sunday School how to pray whenever anything frightened her. And now she knew that this was an opportunity for her to overcome her fear.

She had learned that God is Love and that He is all good. She had also learned that He guides, guards, and governs His children and that Jesus had proved this in healing the sick and stilling the storm. As she thought about these truths, she knew that her mother and the others were safe at that very moment.
