I am writing this testimony in the expectation that it will help others, particularly young people, who may be struggling with a similar problem.
For about thirty years I was enslaved by addiction to alcohol. A doctor prescribed gin for severe periodic pains when I was thirteen years old. I was shy and had a sense of inferiority. Alcohol supplied factitious boldness. So as time passed, the medical doses grew into exaggerated social drinking. I realized that this was very bad for me; and often through willpower I gave up drinking for quite long periods, but always in some moment of stress returned to it again.
For many years I held an exacting journalistic position involving late hours, and finally I had a complete breakdown which kept me confined to the house for a year and unable to work for two years. Materia medica proved inadequate even to alleviate my sufferings.
