During my freshman year in...

During my freshman year in college in Minnesota I worked for my room and board by doing odd jobs for an elderly widow. She also gave me a small weekly cash allowance. The amount received seemed to be just enough to meet my basic needs. Then we moved from a large house to an apartment; and since my duties were lighter, my allowance was discontinued.

Instead of tackling the problem immediately, as a Christian Scientist should, I allowed fear to enter my thinking, and I found myself walking long distances in sub-zero weather in order to save carfare, cutting down on meals, and so on. Finally, just as I reached the point of realizing that something had to be done, I read a testimony in a copy of the Journal written by a man who told of solving a similar problem of lack when he was in college.

This man had affirmed the fact that God's abundance is expressed in the form of spiritual ideas and that these right ideas are available to man at all times. The point which particularly helped me was the fact that this man acknowledged the infinitude of true spiritual supply currently— day by day as his needs arose—and acted accordingly.
