Teacher as Instructor and Friend

Many blessings come from the Christian Science Sunday School when teacher, parent, and pupil cooperate. The center of this correlated activity is the teacher, the child's true friend.

Mary Baker Eddy writes, "The vital part, the heart and soul of Christian Science, is Love" (Science and Health, p. 113). Expressing such love, the teacher will find it quite natural to fit into the role of a loving friend. The little pupils in the beginning classes, like birds just out of the nest, find the Sunday School a big adventure in their experience. Through love and friendliness, they can be encouraged to look forward expectantly to each weekly opportunity to attend Sunday School.

As the child advances into the intermediate classes, the continuing value of the teacher-home relationship becomes increasingly important. A telephone call or an occasional visit by the teacher to the home helps him to understand the child's needs better. It can provide opportunities to clarify mistaken views of Christian Science in non-Christian Science homes. It can aid in family cooperation in the matter of attendance and home study.
