"He that dwelleth in the secret...
"He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty" is the beginning of the ninety-first Psalm, which has been my favorite psalm as long as I can remember. It always gives me a great feeling of safety and security.
Christian Science first came into my life when I was healed of measles almost instantaneously at the age of seven. I enjoyed the privilege of being a pupil in a Christian Science Sunday School, which gave me a foundation of spiritual understanding that was very useful to me later on in life. At the outbreak of the Second World War, I was living in a European country in which an announcement was made that anyone in possession of books in English must deliver them at a certain place to be burned. My husband and I had not given in our Christian Science books. One day three officials appeared at our front door and proceeded to search the house. They turned everything upside down, but would not at first tell us what they were looking for. During the search I prayed for our protection. Just before they left, one of the men told my husband that they had been looking for English books, but had not found them. Of course, they meant Christian Science literature. We attributed to God's presence and protection the fact that our books had not been seen by them. They had not been hidden in cupboards, which had been searched, but were on shelves of the bedside tables for constant use.
Later in the war I was sustained, guided, and protected in air raids and from other hardships as I undertook a ten-day journey to another country with our two very voting children in an effort to find my husband. At the end of the journey, I found him alive in an internment camp.
