RADIO PROGRAM No. 139 - Don't Let Hate Take Root!

HOST: A good gardener doesn't give a weed a chance to take hold. Are we as quick to get rid of hate, or do we sometimes let it take root and grow?

INTERVIEWER: Most people recognize the need to get rid of hate. Not long ago a New Jersey newspaper said that the longer hate "is permitted to grow unchecked, the more stubbornly permanent it becomes, until eventually it smothers the good ground of love which originally nourished the personality." But how to keep hate from growing is the question. What are your comments as a Christian Scientist on how to overcome hate?

SPEAKER: The first thing to do is to face the fact that hate is no more natural or normal than stealing. If tempted to steal, most people would pray for courage and strength to resist the temptation. If tempted to hate, they should be equally vigorous in resisting such a temptation. You know, hate clouds and darkens the true concept, or view, of oneself and others. The Bible expresses it in this way (I John 2:9, 10): "He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him."
