Mary Baker Eddy writes on...

Mary Baker Eddy writes on page 393 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and that in Science man reflects God's government. Have no fear that matter can ache, swell, and be inflamed as the result of a law of any kind, when it is selfevident that matter can have no pain nor inflammation." This positive statement has been very helpful to me in overcoming a physical difficulty. I wish to express sincere gratitude for the healing.

About nine years ago, while on active duty in the United States Navy, I was ordered to a naval hospital for clinical observation. The medical diagnosis was tuberculosis. I was in the naval hospital for a period of four months during which time numerous medical tests and X-ray pictures were made. At the end of this four-month period I was considered physically unfit for active service and was placed on the Navy's temporary disability retired list and released from the hospital.

Immediately thereafter I asked for Christian Science treatment and relied on it alone. In examining my thought I found that there was much fear to be overcome. In addition to that, there was resentment toward the Navy that I had been harboring for some time over an incident that had occurred a few months prior to my being hospitalized. To this I had added resentment for having been forced out of the service against what was my human wish concerning the situation.

I set about to remove these unwholesome thoughts from my consciousness, and as I was able to do so I felt physically and mentally better than I had felt for some time. In accordance with Navy regulations I reported to a Navy hospital for periodical physical examinations over a period of five years. The last examination I took was given in order that the Navy might make a final determination whether I should be recalled to duty or permanently retired from the service. According to law, this must be done within a five-year period in such cases.

In addition to this required examination, the Bureau of Medicine requested that I furnish them with information concerning the drugs I had taken and the name of my physician during the period since my release from the hospital.

I replied that I had taken no drugs whatsoever and that I had relied solely upon Christian Science treatment during this period. I was sure that it was right to make my position clear in this regard. A few days later the Navy department notified me that I was considered physically fit for full active duty since I had no symptoms of the disease and had taken no drugs during the five-year period.

I rejoiced in this proof that radical reliance on the Christ, Truth, had freed me just as Jesus promised it would when he said (John 8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

At this it was necessary to inform the Navy department whether or not I wished to be recalled to active duty. After having been away from the service for five years, I was undecided about what I should do. I turned to divine Mind for guidance and was led to accept recall to active duty.

I am so grateful for this unfoldment, for the lessons learned during this experience, and for the help given to me by devoted Christian Science practitioners.—(Lt. Cdr.) Charles E. Langton, Mayport, Florida.
