"Follow thou me"

The first tenet of The Mother Church reads, "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life." This tenet is found on page 497 of Science and Health by our Leader. The textbook enables us to understand the spiritual meaning of the Bible and shows us how we can apply Scriptural truths in our daily life.

In the Gospel of John we read that when a disciple once expressed concern over what another disciple was going to do and questioned Jesus about it, he received a reply which included the words (21:22), "What is that to thee? follow thou me." The Master's words indicate clearly that each one is responsible only for his own thinking and action. Therefore, no matter what problem may present itself, a study of the Bible, together with Science and Health, and earnest prayer for guidance can bring the light needed for a right solution.

Individual right thinking is our responsibility to God. This involves obedience to the rules laid down by Christ Jesus and a willingness to clear out of thought all that is unlike good. As Jesus so clearly pointed out, we are not responsible for what others may say or do or not do. If we are disturbed by something outside our own thought, the need to correct our thinking and to follow the Christ is indicated.
