RADIO PROGRAM No. 133 - Finding the Basis for Agreement

INTERVIEWER: "The bitterest conflicts within families and within offices and workshops have not been washed for great ideals, but for one opinion against another." That comment appeared sometime ago in The Royal Bank of Canada Monthly Letter, and I think many people will agree with it. It does seem true that from childhood on, we are all under pressure to get along with others who disagree with us. But how are we to do this when there are so many opinions to contend with? How can there be a meeting of the minds? What are your comments on that as a Christian Scientist?

SPEAKER: Well, I am interested in your use of the phrase, "meeting of the minds." Throughout the Scriptures the point is emphasized that there is only one God. Specific names for God are given to us in the Bible, such as Love and Spirit, and the Bible also points to God as divine Mind. For instance, Paul in his letter to the Romans said (11: 33), "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!" This points to the recognition that God is the source of infinite wisdom, perfect knowledge, understanding.

Believing in more than one mind, or failing to recognize that God is the only Mind, breaks the First Commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" (Ex. 20:3). Since God is infinite Mind, we are virtually saying, "Thou shalt have no other minds before me, before God."
