"The design of God"

The spiritual message of the Bible is directed to human consciousness, in which Spirit and matter, good and evil, seem to be pitted against each other in a constant battle. The ability to respond to this message comes when the Christ, the spiritual idea of God, prepares human thought for it. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 271), "Christ's Christianity is the chain of scientific being reappearing in all ages, maintaining its obvious correspondence with the Scriptures and uniting all periods in the design of God."

The Bible presents both the history and the prophecy of the unfolding of the spiritual idea. History may be the more easily followed, but there is great spiritual rejoicing when one sees history in the Bible confirming its spiritual prophecies in fulfillment of "the design of God."

For example, the prophet Isaiah foretold the coming of the Messiah (see 61:1, 2), and Jesus identified himself with this prophecy, declaring, "This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears" (Luke 4:21). Then, in preparing human thought for the continuation and extension of his ministry, Jesus foretold the coming of the Comforter, saying (John 14:16), "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever."
