Because of the outstanding qualities of character expressed by her employer, my wife became interested in his religion, Christian Science, four years ago. At that time, I was on the verge of mental incompetence, and a welfare psychologist had said that ten years might be needed to correct my feelings of confusion, bitterness, and fear. I was too frightened to see a Christian Science practitioner until my wife encouraged me to make an appointment.

I shall never forget the sense of peace I felt the evening before seeing the practitioner, and the next day when he spoke to me with great kindness and humility in the words of Jesus and Mrs. Eddy, I felt I had found the way. After that meeting, my desire for tobacco and alcohol vanished, and six weeks later, through the practitioner's help and the study of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, an intestinal fissure had closed.

This painful condition, which surgery had failed to correct, had troubled me constantly for nine years. Pain persisted for some months; but as fear diminished and as I began to see the unreality of the belief that everyone was my enemy, deep feelings of inferiority, self-criticism, fear of people, and memories of an unhappy childhood all faded, and soon the healing was complete.
