WORDS OF CURRENT INTEREST
[The words in this issue are related to the Lesson–Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly designated to be read in Christian Science churches on June 16, 1963.]
Ur Of The Chaldees (Neh. 9:7)
A large city in Babylonia (otherwise known as Chaldea) in which the patriarch Abram, later renamed Abraham, was born. Archeological research has proved that Ur (u as in urn), although rich and prosperous, was a center of idolatry. The book of Genesis indicates the way in which the patriarch, renouncing this pagan background, traveled to Canaan and there "called upon the name of the Lord" (Gen. 12:8).
