Facing Emotion-charged Social Issues
Christ Jesus stated the whole law in two commandments, the second of which he said was like the first. They are: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind," and, "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself" (Matt. 22:37, 39). This law provides the basis for solution of problems which stir the emotions of mankind today.
Christian Science teaches that the God to whom we are to give all our affection, our entire sense of being, and our consecrated thought is Spirit, divine Principle, Love. It teaches that the real man is the image and likeness of God, His reflection, spiritual, perfect, lovely. But it insists upon the necessity of self-discipline in overcoming false beliefs about God and man in order that human consciousness may grow into a clear apprehension of one's neighbor as he really is. It further insists on the freedom of every individual to work out his own salvation through such self–discipline, and it provides rules to guide one in attaining the goal of perfect obedience to the law of Love.
