Elijah's faithfulness in listening for God's direction and his obedience to the angelic command led him to places of safety, fed him, encouraged him to further spiritual accomplishments. The ability to listen for and hear the divine voice of God had been demonstrated by Abraham, Moses, and others. However, Elijah's experiences bring this ability into unusually clear focus and show him to have been one of the greatest of prophets.
