Reaching the Patient

The object of a Christian Science treatment in a case of illness is to reach the patient mentally with the truth needed to change his thought from sickness to health. On page 365 of Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy writes, "If the Scientist reaches his patient through divine Love, the healing work will be accomplished at one visit, and the disease will vanish into its native nothingness like dew before the morning sunshine."

It is plain that Christ Jesus knew how to reach the "patient through divine Love." And Christian Science teaches us how we may follow him. It teaches us that divine Love is God, the Father-Mother of man, and that man, God's image, always reflects the health of divine Life and always feels the invigorating and protecting power of Spirit. A mortal is not this real man. But the patient can be shown that in his true being he is not a mortal, not sick; that he is a divine image of God. This can he brought about through silent prayer.

A patient who may be miles away from the practitioner can be healed through the practitioner's prayer. However, this is not accomplished through either mental telepathy or thought transference, as neither is a part of Christian Science treatment.
