RADIO PROGRAM No. 48 - What Is Success?

HOST: A person's concept of success tends to shape his whole outlook on life. In his book "The Status Seekers," Vance Packard describes the effects of enthroning material possessions as the symbol of success. He says: "Many people are badly distressed, and scared, by the anxieties, inferiority feelings, and straining generated by this unending process of rating and status striving. The status seekers, as I use the term, are people who are continually straining to surround themselves with visible evidence of the superior rank they are claiming." Young people and adults alike ask: If you can't judge success in terms of material things, how can you judge it? Plow would you as a Christian Scientist answer that question?

SPEAKER: The really successful person is one who has learned to distinguish true riches—spiritual riches—from the counterfeit, the mere accumulation of material goods. The fellow who has everything that money can buy—houses, cars, boats—but lacks what money can't buy could hardly be called a success. And money can't buy joy, peace, a sense of true worth and purpose, an understanding of God and man. The true foundation for success is spiritual.
