In the summer of 1960 our family...
In the summer of 1960 our family spent several weeks on the East Coast. One morning I awoke with a severe leg and back pain; mortal mind immediately said, "Slipped disk." I had only been studying Christian Science for about six months and had just joined a branch church. Prior to this I had been deep in medical science and had suffered often from the above-mentioned difficulty. On this morning I went right to my Bible and my copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and studied the Bible Lesson, given in the Christian Science Quarterly. The lesson was inspiring, but there was no change in my condition.
I had promised to take our children to the beach, where we were to meet two other mothers and their children; so I explained the problem to the children and asked for their prayerful help. We decided to go and expect good, and with the children's help I was able to get to the beach. Soon our friends arrived, and the children raced down the beach to gather rocks and shells. We three mothers sat chatting until we heard a scream, and one child came running up the beach to say that there had been an accident and that a child had been hit in the eye with a rock.
We looked down the beach as the boy started our way, and the material evidence was alarming. The child was a guest of another, and his mother was not present. To clear my own thought of fear, I closed my eyes and declared the truth of man's perfection as the image and likeness of God divine Spirit; I also declared that there are no accidents in God's kingdom, nor is there any carelessness. Then I became aware of complete silence.
