"Joining Another Society"

Mary Baker Eddy makes a distinction between the real and the unreal Christian Scientist, and she shows this distinction to be a matter of obedience to God's law. She says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 119), "Insubordination to the law of Love even in the least, or strict obedience thereto, tests and discriminates between the real and the unreal Scientist."

Probably nothing in Mrs. Eddy's great accomplishment of founding the Church which protects, disseminates, and perpetuates her discovery—Christian Science—spells out the practice of the law of Love so clearly as does the Manual of The Mother Church. And every member of this Church agrees to subscribe to the Tenets and By-Laws of the Church when he signs the application form prescribed in the Manual (pp. 116—119).

The real Christian Scientist is loyal to his pledge and realizes that through humble obedience to the Manual he can best follow his Leader, who received the final revelation of Christ, Truth, and in this way hasten the redemption of humanity from the mortal sense of life. The real Scientist is aware that in her Church, Mrs. Eddy provided the most powerful weapon possible for the final victory over the forces of materialism that attempt to engulf the world.
