A Better Marriage

When Christ Jesus declared (Matt. 5:17), "I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil," he expressed an essential point in the Science he taught. Customs that are humanly normal and wholesome are not eliminated through the application of Christian Science; they are improved.

That marriage is normal and wholesome is implied by the fact that the Ten Commandments given to Moses on Mount Sinai include two relating to marriage: "Thou shalt not commit adultery," and, "Thou shalt not covet…thy neighbour's wife" (Ex. 20:14, 17). And Jesus, referring to those united in marriage, said (Matt. 19:6): "Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder."

A basic fact of Christian Science is that man is spiritual. He is the image of the one Spirit, God, the Father-Mother, whose masculine and feminine qualities are always inseparable. Material elements do not exist in the real man. To him, therefore, physical attraction is impossible. Spiritual attraction alone is real. These truths understood and applied to the human institution called marriage do not destroy mutual attraction; they purify it. At every point in the experience of one who is married, where truths of God and man are recognized, discordant material elements in the marriage are overcome, and harmonious spiritual elements come to the fore.
