"The light shineth in darkness"
In the Bible, Spirit is often represented by light, and matter by darkness. Speaking of God, Spirit, the Apostle John declared (1:4, 5): "In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not."
Thought based upon matter as substance is in darkness and cannot comprehend this spiritual light. But as Christ, the spiritual idea of God, rouses human thought from belief in materialism, it enables mankind to comprehend the revelations of Spirit. The Christ awakens us from the belief that we are material and leads us into the understanding of our true spiritual existence as sons of God. We emerge from darkness and dwell in the light which is Life.
Spiritual ideas are enlightening. If we are unacquainted with our true spiritual identities, it is because materialism has closed our eyes, obscuring Spirit from us. Christ, in whom we find our true selfhood, opens our eyes and enables us to recognize and accept the truth of ourselves as actually spiritual in nature, not material.
