About five years ago, I suffered from what I thought was an abscessed tooth. I did prayerful, metaphysical work as we are taught to do in Science, but the condition became worse. There was swelling and pain, and after a week, during which I lost much weight, I could not move my jaws. Friends who were not interested in Christian Science expressed great concern about my condition, and a dentist's son who was one of them said that in his opinion I had lockjaw. At this point I decided unwisely to see a dentist if only to find out what was wrong.

The next day after the dentist had examined the X-ray pictures he said there was nothing wrong with my tooth, but he recommended that I go to a hospital for attention immediately. He said he believed that I had lockjaw and a strangulation of some sort. After I had left him I realized that I had to free myself from the mesmerism of mortal mind to which I had succumbed.

I drove to the office of a Christian Science practitioner. After I had told her all, she asked me whether I preferred to go to a hospital or to work the problem out with God. Of course I chose God. I had no fear, for I knew that if we put our trust in God, He will help us. That was on a Monday night.
