WORDS OF CURRENT INTEREST

[The words in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly designated to be read in Christian Science churches on October 21, 1962.]

A ransom for many
(Matt. 20:28)

As used here, "many" can mean simply "more than a few" rather than "less than all." In I Timothy 2:6, Paul describes Christ Jesus as providing "a ransom for all."

Galatians

(ga-la shanz—first a as in sofa, second as in ace, third as in account). Natives or inhabitants of Galatia in central Asia Minor. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians was written to "the churches of Galatia" (Gal. 1:2). Galatia is believed to have been conquered and settled by Gauls in the third century B.C.

The ashes of an heifer
sprinkling the unclean
(Hebr. 9:13)

The reference is to Numbers 19:2, 3, 5, 17, where it is explained that according to the regulations of the Old Testament, the ashes of a red heifer were thought to contribute to purification.

Rabbinical

(ra-bini-kal—both a's as in account, both i's as in is). Of or pertaining to the rabbis (rabiz—a as in add, i as in ice), or rabbins, or to the opinions, learning, or language of the rabbis. Much of their learning was based on Hebrew theology, philosophy, and tradition. (Cf. Matt. 15:1-3 and Mark 7:5-9.)

The chastisement of our peace
(Isa. 53:5)

In Hebrew, the term translated "of" can also mean "leading to," while the word rendered "peace" is widely used in the sense of health, success, or welfare.

Intelligence

(in-teli-jens—first i as in is, second as in charity, first e as in end, second as in silent). The capacity for knowledge and understanding, especially as applied to the handling of novel situations. The quality or trait of understanding; mental acuteness.

Cardinal (adjective)

(kardi-nal—first a as in arm, second as in account, i as in charity; or, -n'l). Of basic importance; underlying; hence, preeminent in importance; superior; chief; principal.

Bayonet

(bao-net—a as in ace, o as in obey, e as in end). A weapon of the dagger kind, made to be fitted on the muzzle end of a musket or rifle. Bayonets were first made at Bayonne, in France, hence the name.
