When I was a young woman, I...

When I was a young woman, I had specific training in hospital curriculum and spent several years in the performance of medical duties, serving in hospitals in various capacities. And in later life, both as a professional and as a volunteer, my interest and activities were connected in some measure with medical developments and practices.

Some years ago I became acquainted with a neighbor who was a Christian Science practitioner, although I was not aware of this fact until we had known each other for a considerable length of time. We had many discussions regarding Christian Science and medicine.

One day I acknowledged to the practitioner that for several years I had been suffering from an arthritic spinal condition, which was very painful and impeded my walking and for which I was receiving medical treatment, although thus far without relief. Through our association, I had acquired a real respect for her religion, and so I decided to discontinue medical treatment and to try Christian Science and asked her for treatment. At that period I understood very little of Science; but I made an effort to "lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help" (Ps. 121:1).
