When I first began to investigate...
When I first began to investigate Christian Science I was not in search of physical healing, but I had been searching since boyhood for a satisfactory concept of God. The god I had been taught to worship was at once a good god and a vengeful god, punishing his creation for their sins of omission as well as those of commission. This concept I could not accept, and at seventeen I left the church in which I had been brought up, never to return.
During the First World War, while in the United States Navy, I was first introduced to Christian Science. The Service Editions of the Bible and of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy were given me along with some hand-knit scarves. The scarves I used, but the books I gave away.
Later, after my discharge from the Navy, I attended a lecture on Christian Science and a Wednesday evening testimony meeting in a Church of Christ, Scientist. I was deeply impressed by the true nature of God as explained on both occasions.
