Many times when I was young I heard of how my grandmother and mother became interested in Science after attending the trial of one of the first Christian Science practitioners, who was arrested for failure to obtain a license under the provisions of the medical practice act of her state. She was finally acquitted, and my grandmother turned to the healing truth she practiced. My mother had always been a delicate child, but through Christian Science treatment she was completely and permanently healed and remained a loyal student of Science.

One afternoon I was playing with some friends in the loft of their barn. We discovered a powder horn full of powder in an old trunk and decided to experiment with it. I poured out a considerable amount of powder, and after several attempts I succeeded in igniting it. My face and one hand received the full force of the explosion which followed. My friends' mother took me home and urged my mother to call a doctor at once because my eyes and face had been badly burned.

Mother remained very calm and told her that I would be all right. She then called a practitioner. The front part of my hair, my eyebrows, and my lashes were burned away, and my eyes would not open. I remember very clearly that Mother assured me that man cannot be separated from God, from his true, spiritual vision, or from any of the spiritual qualities he expresses.
