My parents came to California...

My parents came to California in 1884, before I was born. It was believed that the climate would be beneficial because my father was suffering from consumption in an advanced stage, and my mother's lungs also had become infected. When I was about two years old, a neighbor who had come from Boston, Massachusetts, gave my father a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and my parents read it. Shortly afterward my mother experienced painless childbirth when my sister was born. My mother and father had no more lung trouble; but they did not continue their study of the textbook, not realizing that they had been healed by reading it.

Thirty-two years later my sister passed on. A neighbor gave my mother a copy of Science and Health to help her to overcome grief. Mother read it and brought it to me at my home. I was expecting a baby and was very ill. My mother asked me to read the book because it had helped her. I read it through and laid it aside. I only remembered the testimonies relating to childbirth in the chapter entitled "Fruitage." I felt well, and the birth was harmonious; but like my parents before me I did not realize that reading the textbook could bring good into my experience.

Soon after this I wanted to sew on a quilt, but my mother said, "Daughter, you will ruin your eyes." I did not know that I had to deny this wrong thought. I worked on the quilt, and within six months after our son's birth I had to put on glasses.
