Man Is Pure and Upright

God, Spirit, we understand from the account given in the first chapter of Genesis, created man in His own image and likeness. Man, then, is necessarily spiritual, and spirituality includes the element of purity. Sinlessness characterizes the man formed by God, good, and no sinful influence can alter the pure nature of man.

If this statement seems to conflict with the apparent human situations in which mortal influences are at work in the minds of men, these influences can be reversed and destroyed if one faithfully applies the rules presented in Christian Science as he learns how to detect and reject error and to affirm man's pure and upright status as the child of God. "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God," said Christ Jesus in his Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5:8).

If false pleasures and appetites which stifle spiritual growth and interfere with the harmonious enjoyment of daily life are present, a strong stand should be taken for Truth and against error.
