Our Relationship to God Is Primary
Christ Jesus gave us an example of what one can accomplish by putting his relationship to God first; and the secret of his success is found in the reply to the lawyer who asked (Matt. 22:36), "Which is the great commandment in the law?"
Jesus said: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."
"Render to Cæsar the things that are Cæsar's, and to God the things that are God's," Jesus counseled his disciples (Mark 12:17); and he prayed that his followers not be taken out of the world but saved from evil (see John 17:15). When the proving of our relationship to God is primary in our hearts and we render "to God the things that are God's," we too are saved from evil; we live under beneficent spiritual laws.
