I did not turn to Christian Science...

I did not turn to Christian Science for healing, but rather for a better understanding of God and of man's relationship to Him. However, after taking up the study of this Science, I was healed of migraine. That was in 1928, and since then I have not missed one day from my office because of illness. This proved to me that when we apply its teachings, Christian Science is not only a curative but a preventive.

In June, 1959, when I was abroad, I was a guest at a hotel at the time it burned to the ground. The guests were awakened at about three in the morning by someone's shouting: "Fire! All out!" Then the fire alarm sounded. I opened my door, which was on the third floor, and found the hall so filled with smoke I could hardly see the other side of it. I turned back to my room and picked up my handbag containing my passport, tickets, and money. I put on my bedroom slippers and coat and started for the stairs, but found them completely enveloped in flames. I was one of a group of fourteen on a conducted tour; and as I turned to retrace my steps, I recognized another woman in the group who seemed to be in a state of panic. I urged her to join me in finding a way out.

Before going very far, I stepped into one of the open bedrooms and went to the window to get some relief from the smoke. The walls around were cracking from the heat of the flames. It was at this time that the omnipotence and omnipresence of God came to my consciousness, and I called aloud, "O God, help me!" Almost at once I found myself and my companion on a stairway down which we were able to walk to safety. I had never before experienced so quick an answer to a prayer. I needed immediate help, and I received it.
