My introduction to Christian Science...
My introduction to Christian Science came when I was preparing for my first public concert as a singer, and my teacher recommended that I see a Christian Science practitioner for help in overcoming fear. Through the practitioner's prayerful metaphysical work not only was the concert a success, but my fear was completely annihilated, and I felt I was living in a new world of confidence and assurance.
One day when I was just a beginner in the study of Science, I had an attack of influenza. On my way home to go to bed after a trying day's work, I suddenly felt the impulse to go to a Christian Science Reading Room. Although too ill to read when I got there, I sat quietly and poured into my thinking the truth of a perfect God who creates only a perfect child, or idea, and denied to disease any power or activity. After dwelling for about fifty minutes on the true and spiritual status of man, I opened my eyes, arose, and kept an appointment for a singing lesson, free from the influenza.
About fourteen years ago I was called to my mother's home after she had suffered several strokes. Three doctors had just said that the end was near. During my train ride to reach her, I held to the thought from Zephaniah (3: 17), "The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save." At her bedside I did not accept as final the doctors' verdict; but turning with all my heart and strength to God, I cleared my consciousness of the suggestion that man, who is actually the spiritual expression of God, can have limited life.
