It is with great joy that I relate...
It is with great joy that I relate a few healing experiences in Christian Science.
From early childhood I had suffered from physical debility. Medication and frequent visits to a physician gave only temporary relief. Upon my last visit, fifteen years ago, I was X-rayed and informed that surgery was necessary to restore the normal digestive function. My fear of surgery made me defer this procedure. During this waiting period a friend invited me to a Wednesday testimony meeting in a Church of Christ, Scientist. The readings from the desk, the beautiful hymns, and the convincing testimonies were inspiring. I was filled with a sense of mental release and hope.
The desire to learn more of this Christianly scientific way of Life increased. Through earnest study of the Bible, together with the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and with the help of a practitioner, I began to awaken to newness of life. Radical reliance on the healing power of Truth resulted in my complete recovery from the chronic malady.
But at the same time other problems began to pyramid. I was suffering from tumors. A marital situation with serious implications arose and was followed by a court action. Simultaneously, my son, after six weeks of basic training, was sent overseas for active duty. My little world seemed to have crumbled about me. I was mentally depressed, lonely, and fearful of life. I felt a growing hunger for the touch of affection from my dear ones.
In this hour of depletion I turned unreservedly to God in prayer. Immediately I felt that divine Love embraced my being. The petition in Mrs. Eddy's spiritual interpretation of the Lord's Prayer (Science and Health, p. 17), "Give us grace for to-day; feed the famished affections," was answered for me. On page 332 of the textbook we are told that "Father-Mother is the name for Deity, which indicates His tender relationship to His spiritual creation." As I pondered this statement, I gained a strong conviction of my omnipresent Father's tender care. Loneliness and a growing hunger for a personal sense of love were overcome.
No specific metaphysical work was done for the healing of tumors, yet they disappeared when humility, meekness, and patience led self-pity and selfishness to yield to the divine nature.
Some years ago a numbness developed in my body; I could neither raise one of my arms nor move one of my legs. My speech was also impaired. I managed to telephone to a practitioner for treatment. A member of my family who is not a Christian Scientist wished me to be hospitalized for care. I took a firm stand and emphatically refused hospitalization and medication.
Though the physical disability was obvious, I moved about, joyously acknowledging God and praising Him for His omnipresent healing power. I remember so clearly that there was no alarm or fear in my thought regarding a condition of the body, for I had already experienced some beautiful spiritual healings. Through the illumined understanding of man's unity with Spirit, God, I was completely free within three days, without a vestige of infirmity.
I am humbly grateful to God for Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, and words alone are inadequate to express my appreciation of our Leader and of the many activities of the Christian Science movement.—(Mrs.) Bette Cohen, Westwood, California.
