He Cares for Us

"By understanding God, Spirit, ... as the one and only creator, we find release from earthly woe"

The Bible is replete with assurances and promises of God's protection and guidance for us. By explaining our spiritual sonship Christian Science shows how these assurances and promises can be demonstrated. We are reminded in Romans (8:16, 17), "The Spirit itself beareth withness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ."

Through the maze of human events, evil frequently clamors for recognition as though it were real. Sometimes its claims seem subtle and deceiving; at other times they seem bold and overwhelming. To protect itself from the onslaught of error, humanity is ever reaching out for some assurance of security. Whether the one seeking security knows little or nothing about Christian Science or whether he is an experienced Christian Scientist, he can feel God's tender care. Christ Jesus demonstrated God's care as he walked the shores of Galilee, healing sickness and sin. He showed it also in raising the dead.

Mrs. Eddy tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 365, 366), "The poor suffering heart needs its rightful nutriment, such as peace, patience in tribulation, and a priceless sense of the dear Father's loving-kindness." God is forever supplying this need by making us aware of our inseparability from Him.

All the inharmony unhappiness in the world are the results of false beliefs about God and His creation, beliefs in a mortal selfhood and in a universe apart from the kingdom of God. Such beliefs bring a self-imposed bondage and the misapprehension that God is afar off and environed in mystery. But in the forty-sixth Psalm we are given this promise: "God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early."

No greater expectation of God's care could be expressed than that given in the final line of the Lord's Prayer (Matt. 6:13), "For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever." Here is summarized the unmistakable jurisdiction that God, divine Love, maintains over man and the universe. This omnipotent, divine control is perpetual, without beginning or end.

Mortal mind, alias error, has many beguiling presentments, among them self-pity, sometimes disguised as grief; resentment, often appearing as sensitiveness; domination of another; and pride of intellectualism. A more commonly accepted falsity is the belief in mortal parenthood. We are told clearly in the first chapter of Genesis that God made all that was made. It is logical to conclude that He could not and would not be the author of two opposite types of creation. By understanding God, spirit, divine Love, as the one and only creator, we find release from earthly woe.

An illustration of the power of this understanding of God to heal even what may seem a most critical instance of illness may be found in the following incident. Some years ago a family living in a rural area in a small town in the United States found themselves facing a serious crisis. A young child in their home had been ill for some time; and the illness had reached a point where two attending physicians declared that they had exhausted their efforts and that she could not possibly recover; in fact, she would live but a little while longer.

In their hour of despair the family reached out to God for help. They had been told about Christian Science, but they had little or no knowledge of the help available through this religion. However, they decided to telephone a Christian Science practitioner who was many miles away. In response the practitioner fearlessly assured them of God's love and constant care for His creation. She promised to help them through prayer.

So omnipotent is the truth that a change for the better was mediate. The child was quickly and completely restored to health.

The requirements for experiencing more evidence of our divine sonship and our spiritual inheritance are few: a simple trust in God, a humble heart, a receptive consciousness waiting and ready to "behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God" (I John 3:1).

In our study of the Bible and of Mrs. Eddy's writings we can all learn more of God's omnipotence and omnipresence and experience proof of them in our affairs. The infinite Love, which holds the universe in its primal, harmonious order, touches the hungering heart in sweet gentleness and mercy, bringing freedom from fear, hate, and discord. God faileth never!

Mrs. Eddy tells us "Retrospection and Introspection" (p. 22): "It may be that the mortal life-battle still wages, and must continue till its involved errors are vanquished by victory-bringing Science; but this triumph will come! God is over all. He alone is our origin, aim, and being. The real man is not of the dust, nor is he ever created through the flesh; for his father and mother are the one Spirit, and his brethren are all the children of the one parent, the eternal good." God indeed cares for us always!
