Before I came into Christian Science...
Before I came into Christian Science I was suffering from a severe illness which I thought was a nervous breakdown. I could neither eat, sleep, nor rest in any way. I found it impossible to take any interest in my surroundings or to do any kind of work. I had a medical examination, and the doctor informed me that I had schizophrenia.
I was sent to hospital, but I refused to remain there. I did agree to have treatment from a psychiatrist, however. Eventually the psychiatrist urged me to have hypnotic treatment. I refused, for by this time I felt that the treatment I was receiving was making my mental state worse instead of better, and I was feeling completely hopeless.
My mother is a Christian Scientist, and finally, when I was at the end of my tether, I visited a Christian Science practitioner of whom I knew. At my first visit she gave me a verse from the Bible to learn and hold to. This is the verse: "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind" (II Tim. 1:7).
