In 1946 I borrowed from a friend who was a student of Christian Science a copy of Science and Health. After reading it I asked her to purchase one for me, for I desired the understanding that I felt repeated reading would give me.
Although at this time my wish for enlightenment was merely intellectual, I was healed of chronic colds by the application of what I had read. I was intrigued by this healing, but was hardly in the humble frame of mind to receive more of Christian Science.
A succession of events which forced me to assess my personal accomplishments, the only criterion I understood at that time, brought me in 1949 to the brink of despair. Willing at last to be separated from my unhappy human experience, I turned to God and was instantly supported in what has proved to be a long period of spiritual building.
