Although as a youth I had the privilege of attending the Christian Science Sunday School, I did not recognize until many years later the great blessing it held for me. During World War II, I thought I was missing something in matter. I listened to the suggestions of evil and became addicted to smoking. In fact, I was literally a slave to tobacco and other bad habits.

As always happens when we seek joy in matter, we soon find its sorrows. And so it was with me. Sickness, such as chronic stomach trouble, heartburn, and hemorrhoids, often forced me to remain in bed. I was a victim of all these illnesses for several years. In addition, as a soldier I had suffered a brain injury, accompanied by many painful and disturbing symptoms.

Seeing no way out through material means, in desperation I began to think constructively. This was something I had not done for a long time; otherwise the conditions which seemed so real and distressing to me would not have arisen. Some of the basic truths which I had learned in Sunday School came to me. I picked up the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which I had with me and said to myself: Now I shall begin to study this Science. I am ready to observe and obey every command and every rule as though it had been written for me. Then and then only can my thinking be entirely free and complete healing be received.
