By the application of Christian Science I was healed of pain and discomfort which had for years interfered with my normal activity and rest. Before I began to read or study Christian Science, my back had pained me, especially at night, and I often got out of bed and sat in a straight chair for hours in order to get some relief. I went to a doctor, faithfully used the prescription he gave me, and even started sleeping on a bed board in a futile attempt to gain relief.

Even after I began the study of Christian Science and had some healings, the back condition had become so much a part of me that I continued to accept it as something I must live with. However, upon learning more of Christian Science, it became clear to me that I could be healed. I gave up all material remedies; but my own understanding was not sufficient to bring about healing, and a Christian Science practitioner gave me help for some time.

As a result of her loving work, it was uncovered that I was harboring evil thoughts about people of a certain nationality. During the second world conflict I had been a prisoner of war, and I was still believing that my captors were gruff and unkind and that even their language was a sort of angry shouting. The practitioner willingly helped me understand that man is the image and likeness of God good, and that what I had been believing was true about those who had imprisoned me was not true of their real selfhood as the reflection of God.
