Progress in the College Organizations
The Mother Church receives reports from many parts of the world describing the healing work being carried forward by Christian Science organizations at colleges and universities. These organizations are formed in accordance with Article XXIII, Section 8, of the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy.
From university students in Germany comes this organization report:
"A most important duty of Christian Scientists at universities is to prove and demonstrate as many statements of divine law as possible. We should try to translate man and the universe back into their original spiritual meaning. God, divine Mind, helps us. When we listen to this Mind and are obedient, the truths we need are revealed to us. As we reject false theories and practices based on matter, we learn to accept as true the demonstrable truths of the Comforter, Christian Science, which are based on divine law.
"One of our members gave the following testimony: She was greatly distressed when she first arrived at the university. She found herself unable to meet the demands of university life, academically and socially. One day, after deep prayer, she realized that she had been trying to get something which she felt she lacked. The thought came that she must give and share more. However, it seemed that she had nothing of value to contribute to those around her. Suddenly she realized that as a member of The Mother Church she could prove and demonstrate the statements of divine law taught in Christian Science.
"Somehow she had never before shown her gratitude for the precious truths she had been taught in the Christian Science Sunday School. Now was the time to show that gratitude by demonstration and proof! Turning to the divine law, which declares man is the likeness of the one perfect God, she found inner strength and assurance. She stopped destructive criticisms of her professors and colleagues. The compassionate and spiritual view of man expressed by the Way-shower, Christ Jesus, became clearer to her. Gradually satisfying relationships were established, her daily tasks became more reasonable, and she began to enjoy life again.
"As she grew in spiritual grace, her desire to share with others also grew. This expansive love led her to consider anew the provision in the Church Manual relating to Christian Science organizations at colleges and universities. Joining with other Scientists in the university, she helped to establish an organization for students and faculty.
"During the early formative stages, differences among those in the group melted. She and the others saw the need of more than mere talking about Science as had been their custom. They pondered Mrs. Eddy's words: 'Assembling themselves together, and listening to each other amicably, or contentiously, is no aid to students in acquiring solid Christian Science. Experience and, above all, obedience, are the aids and tests of growth and understanding in this direction' (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 156). Then the small group of Scientists decided to hold regular testimony meetings (according to the order outlined on page 122 of the Church Manual). Other practical steps unfolded, and soon the activity received recognition from The Mother Church.
"Today our organization members have the great joy of welcoming those students to our meetings who were forced to flee from their former universities and homes in search of freedom. Many of these students have received no spiritual education at all. This means that our readings and testimonies need to be clear and fundamental. Sometimes the visitors to our meetings are filled with materialistic views, and oftentimes they have never read passages from the Bible or heard the truths of Christian Science. However, these visitors are frequently people who have suffered mentally and physically from the slavery of materialism. They seek a new and a more spiritual way of life. Our organization has the privilege of presenting to them the logic and love of the Christianly scientific system of healing.
"Through daily demonstration and example, our members seek to point the thought of strangers to the Comforter in the manner indicated by St. Paul: 'Prove all things; hold fast that which is good (I Thess. 5:21). In uplifting thought, in translating and transforming it, Christian Science organization members throughout the world are helping to hold in check the supposititious mortal mentality so that it cannot harm society. We are finding that the majesty of divine Love, acknowledged and obeyed, heals the agnostic or atheist and enlightens even the hardened cynic."
