During girlhood I became convinced...
During girlhood I became convinced that as a human being, subject to material conditions, I was inadequate to cope with life. I am profoundly grateful at this time that I was enrolled in a Christian Science Sunday School. There I learned that we really live in God, Spirit, not matter, and that God is the source of intelligence, strength, and safety. These truths were exactly what I needed. Soon afterward the effectiveness of prayer was demonstrated. My efforts to pray aright before going to sleep resulted in freedom from disturbing nightmares.
Other blessings have come in subsequent years. During the time our children have been growing to maturity, we have witnessed many instances of guidance, protection, and healing. One healing in particular taught me never to allow a so-called minor error to go uncorrected; it also helped me to see the uselessness of looking to matter for explanations or reasons.
I did a great deal of walking one day downtown. The shoes I was wearing had never been very comfortable; so I ignored the warning that my feet were hurting. That evening I helped serve a dinner for a group of boys. By the time I arrived home I thought, "I really should throw those shoes away." The next morning, however, I could no longer blame the condition on shoes. Inflammatory rheumatism was much in evidence. With difficulty I hobbled up the steps to a practitioner's office.
"What brought this on?" I asked in bewilderment. "I have been harboring no anger, resentment, or stubbornness."
"My dear," the practitioner said, "you are wasting your time in trying to find a cause for error."
The words were spoken kindly, but they jolted me into an awareness that error is indeed mindless and powerless. It cannot be the cause or reason of anything. Then the practitioner pointed out that Truth is an unfailing support, a sure foundation.
One Bible passage was especially helpful in bringing about unhampered, right activity. It reads, "Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace" (Eph. 6:14,15).
Within a few days I was free. This was over ten years ago, and the healing has been permanent.
I am deeply indebted to Mrs. Eddy for reinstating primitive Christianity. And for class instruction and active church membership, I am sincerely grateful.— (Mrs.) Evelyn P. Jensen, Petaluma, California.
