I was brought up in a Christian home and had always attended Sunday School and church. After becoming deeply engrossed in business and other outside activities, I had permitted material interests to take precedence over my previous religious inclinations.

At a point in my career I was confronted with a loss by fire which required many adjustments in our business. After this experience, a weakened physical condition developed due to exhaustion, or physical and mental fatigue. I was forced to give up my business responsibilities and to seek rest and a change of environment.

Christian Science was not unknown to me, because a member of our family had received help some twenty years previously through the kindness of a practitioner who lived in our neighborhood. At various times I had thumbed through the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, and I had some of the literature; but I had never had more than a slight interest in its teachings.
